The tea parties were a nationwide phenomenon (and are still popping up sporadically in certain areas). For the first time in recent memory, conservatives have perfected the art of social protest and are coordinating a nationwide disruption of town hall meetings during the August recess (though liberals seem to be catching on and trying to preempt them).
Conservatives have also finally learned to harness important social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter. These have become vital tools for disseminating information about events and protests. This comes shortly after an entire campaign season where conservatives were largely inept when it came to new technology. They certainly have learned quickly.
To put things succinctly: conservatives have got it together and are now stronger and more organized than they have been in years. Democrats, on the other hand, have been overly pacified by their 2008 victory and obviously didn't expect Republicans to put up this much of a fight. Republicans have also been aided by a homogenization of ideology within their party, but I'll get into that in a later post.
